When PNG is the right target for an AVIF

Two cases. The image has transparent parts, a logo, an icon, a product cutout, and you need them to stay transparent. Or you plan to edit the image further and do not want a second round of lossy compression on top of the first. PNG handles both. It is lossless, it keeps the alpha channel, and every editor, slide deck app and content system reads it. For a plain photo you are going to post as is, AVIF to JPG gives a file a fifth of the size.

File size, honestly

PNG does not compress photographs well. A 200 KB AVIF photo can become a 4 MB PNG. Graphics with flat colours compress fine, a 50 KB AVIF icon usually stays under 100 KB as PNG. Nothing is gained in detail either way: AVIF is lossy, so whatever the encoder discarded is gone, and PNG only promises not to discard more.

How it runs

The page hands the file to the AVIF decoder built into your browser, draws the result and writes a PNG. No upload, no server, no queue. It does require a browser that knows AVIF, which today means Chrome or Edge 85 and later, Firefox 93 and later, Safari 16.4 and later. Older browsers show a load error on the file. Drop a folder of images and they convert side by side; download them one at a time or as a batch.

Frequently asked questions

Is the transparency preserved?+

Yes. The alpha channel from the AVIF goes into the PNG untouched. That is the main reason to choose PNG over JPG here.

Is there a quality setting?+

No. PNG is lossless, so there is nothing to trade off. The file is as good as the AVIF it came from.

Why is the PNG so much bigger?+

AVIF compresses hard and PNG does not compress photos at all. A twenty-fold increase on a photograph is normal. Icons and flat graphics grow far less.

What about HDR or 10-bit AVIF?+

The browser converts it to standard 8-bit colour before we draw it. Bright highlights may look flatter than in an HDR viewer. There is no way around that in a PNG.

Does it work on an old browser?+

Not if the browser cannot decode AVIF itself. Safari before 16.4 and Firefox before 93 fail. Update the browser and try again.

Is anything uploaded?+

No. Decoding and encoding both happen on your device. Close the tab and nothing remains.
