Where AVIF files come from
AVIF is an image format built on the AV1 video codec. The Alliance for Open Media (the group behind AV1) published the spec in 2019 and by 2022 every major browser could show it. Sites switched for the bandwidth, since an AVIF is often 30 to 50 percent smaller than a JPEG of the same visual quality, which is why right-clicking a picture on a modern site increasingly saves an .avif file. Photoshop, the Photos app on older Windows builds, most email clients and nearly every upload form then refuse it.
Why JPG
Cameras, phones, printers from 2005, forum software and Word all open a JPG. Converting AVIF to JPG costs some file size and a little detail, since both formats are lossy and the JPG encoder compresses the already compressed AVIF pixels a second time. With the slider at 85 or above you won't see the difference on a screen. Go to 100 only for print, the file doubles for almost nothing.
Transparent areas turn white because JPG can't hold transparency; AVIF to PNG keeps them.
Browser support
The converter uses the AVIF decoder already inside your browser, so the browser has to understand AVIF: Chrome and Edge since version 85, Firefox since 93, Safari since 16.4 on macOS Ventura and iOS 16.4. On anything older the file fails with a load error. Nothing is wrong with the file in that case, it's the browser that needs updating. Files dropped together convert one after another and Download All saves every finished JPG.

Why does my AVIF not open in Photoshop?+
Older Photoshop versions don't read AVIF at all and recent ones need the right update. A JPG side-steps the version question, since every Photoshop ever made opens one.
Does converting AVIF to JPG lose quality?+
A little, because both formats are lossy and the JPG encoder compresses the image a second time. At quality 85 or higher you won't see the difference on a screen. If you plan to keep editing, convert to PNG instead.
What happens to transparent areas?+
They turn white, since JPG has no alpha channel. The AVIF to PNG converter keeps transparency.
Does it work on my phone?+
Yes, in Safari on iOS 16.4 or later and in Chrome on Android. The phone does the conversion itself, so a large batch takes a moment longer than on a laptop.
Is anything uploaded to a server?+
No. The browser decodes the AVIF and writes the JPG on your device, and nothing is stored anywhere.
What about animated AVIF?+
Only its first frame converts, because JPG can't animate. This tool doesn't make GIFs or video.
