Where AVIF files come from
AVIF is the image format built on the AV1 video codec. The spec came out in 2019 from the Alliance for Open Media, the group behind AV1, and by 2022 every major browser could show it. Sites switched because it saves bandwidth: an AVIF is often 30 to 50 percent smaller than a JPEG of the same visual quality. So when you right-click and save a picture from a modern site, you increasingly get an .avif file. Then Photoshop, the Photos app on older Windows builds, most email clients and nearly every upload form refuse it.
Why JPG
JPG opens everywhere, full stop. Cameras, phones, printers from 2005, forum software, Word. Converting AVIF to JPG costs some file size and a little detail, since both formats are lossy and the JPG has to encode the already compressed AVIF pixels a second time. Keep the quality slider at 85 or above and you will not see the difference on a screen. Go to 100 only for print, the file doubles for almost nothing.
JPG cannot hold transparency. Transparent areas turn white here. Use AVIF to PNG for those.
How this converter works
It uses the AVIF decoder already inside your browser, so nothing is uploaded. That also means it needs a browser that understands AVIF: Chrome and Edge since version 85, Firefox since 93, Safari since 16.4 on macOS Ventura and iOS 16.4. On an older browser the file fails with a load error, and the fix is to update the browser, not the file. Drop several files at once and they convert in parallel. Frequently asked questions
Why does my AVIF not open in Photoshop?+
Older Photoshop versions do not read AVIF at all, and recent ones need the right update. Converting to JPG side-steps the version question, since every Photoshop ever made opens a JPG.
Does converting AVIF to JPG lose quality?+
A little. Both formats are lossy, so the JPG encoder compresses the image again. At quality 85 or higher the difference is invisible on screen. Convert to PNG if you plan to edit the image further.
What happens to transparent areas?+
They become white. JPG has no alpha channel. Use the AVIF to PNG converter when you need the transparency kept.
Does it work on my phone?+
Yes, in Safari on iOS 16.4 or later and in Chrome on Android. The conversion runs on the phone, so large batches take a moment longer than on a laptop.
Is anything uploaded to a server?+
No. The browser decodes the AVIF and writes the JPG on your device. Nothing is sent anywhere and nothing is stored.
What about animated AVIF?+
Only the first frame is converted. JPG has no animation. For a moving picture you would need a video or GIF, which this tool does not make.
