Enhance photo quality online: correcting a photo or rebuilding it

Two different jobs hide behind the same phrase. One is correcting a photo that was recorded fine but looks flat, with exposure slightly low, colors washed out and edges a touch soft, and that is what this editor does with brightness, contrast, saturation and a real sharpening pass, applied live in your browser. The other is rebuilding a photo that is genuinely damaged, blurred or too small, where the information is not in the file at all. No slider can do that, and anyone selling you one is selling a sharpening filter. So the two are kept apart here: the manual controls on this page are free and instant, and reconstruction runs on a model in the AI studio.

What each slider changes

Brightness and contrast both run from 50 to 150 percent. Brightness lifts or drops the whole image evenly, which rescues an underexposed shot up to the point where the shadows go gray, and contrast pushes dark and light further apart, which is what makes a hazy photo look as if it was taken through clean glass, at the cost of detail in the extremes. Saturation runs from 0, black and white, to 200, which is well past believable. Sharpening runs from 0 to 100 and applies an unsharp mask that raises local contrast along edges. Past about 60 it starts drawing bright halos around outlines and once you notice them you cannot stop noticing them, so stay below that unless the photo is heading for a thumbnail.

Start with Auto-enhance, then back off

The Auto-enhance button sets brightness to 104, contrast to 112, saturation to 112 and sharpening to 35. Those values were picked for the typical phone photo, which leaves the camera deliberately flat so there is room to edit later, and on a picture that has already been through a filter or a heavy-handed camera app the same numbers push it over. Treat them as a starting point. Reset puts everything back to neutral, and because the preview updates as you drag, the fastest way to judge a change is to move a slider too far on purpose, see what breaks, and come back to just before that point.

Upscaling, and what it cannot give you

The upscale checkbox doubles the width and height, so a 1000 by 750 image exports at 2000 by 1500 with smooth interpolation. Pixel count is not detail. The browser averages between pixels it already has, so the result is larger and very slightly softer, which is fine when a platform enforces a minimum size and your file is just under it, but it will not turn a small thumbnail into a print. When the source really is too small or too damaged only a trained model helps, because it reconstructs plausible detail instead of interpolating.
