"You've hit the Free plan limit for image generations requests" in ChatGPT: what it means
You ask ChatGPT for one more picture, and instead of the picture you get this:
"You've hit the Free plan limit for image generations requests. You can create more images when the limit resets in..."#
The message means your free ChatGPT account has used up its image allowance for now. Image generation has its own limit, separate from chat, so you can keep talking to ChatGPT but it won't draw anything until the countdown after "resets in" runs out. When we ran a free account into the limit on September 29, 2026 the countdown said 24 hours, and ChatGPT put a card titled "You're out of images" above it with the exact clock time: "You're out of image creations for now. Start a free Plus trial to continue, or wait for more tomorrow at 6:45 PM."
Other versions of the message#
The wording has changed a few times and the plan name follows your subscription, so the same limit reaches people as any of these, quoted the way they posted them:
- "You've hit the free plan limit for image generation requests. You'll be able to create new images in 16 hours and 23 minutes."
- "You've hit the free plan limit for image generation and editing. You'll be able to make this change once the limit resets in 15 hours and 27 minutes." (OpenAI community forum, June 2025)
- "You've hit the free plan limit for image generations and edits. You'll be able to update this image in 15 hours and 27 minutes once the limit resets." (same thread)
- "You've hit the plus plan limit for image generations requests. You can create more images when the limit resets in 720 hours and 0 minutes." (OpenAI community forum, August 2025)
- "You've reached your image creation limit. Upgrade to ChatGPT Plus...", the older wording
The editing versions tell you something useful: asking ChatGPT to change a picture it already made ("make the sky darker", "remove the text") uses the same allowance as a brand new image, so a few rounds of edits on one picture can eat the whole free quota.
Why the free limit runs out so fast#
Since September 8, 2026 ChatGPT makes images with GPT Image 2.5, OpenAI's newest image model (OpenAI, "Introducing ChatGPT Images 2.5"), and free accounts get a small share of it. We could not find a fixed daily number for the free plan on OpenAI's help pages when we checked on September 29, 2026, so treat any figure you see quoted elsewhere as a guess and trust the reset time in the message.
Does ChatGPT Plus have an image limit too?#
It does, and the wait can be long. Plus and Pro accounts get the same message with their own plan's name in it, and in one thread on OpenAI's forum Plus subscribers posted a countdown of "720 hours and 0 minutes" in August 2025, which is 30 days. Pro subscribers reported the same 720-hour wait from January 2026 on, some of them after fewer than 10 images. A paid plan raises the ceiling without removing it.
How to get past the limit#
- Wait for the reset. It costs nothing and the message tells you exactly how long.
- Upgrade inside ChatGPT. Go, Plus and Pro raise the allowance and each still has a limit of its own.
- Use GPT Image 2.5 somewhere that charges per image and doesn't ration a quota at all.
Making GPT Image 2.5 pictures on Azurade while ChatGPT is locked#

Prompts on Azurade go through a content check as well. If ChatGPT refused an image on content grounds expect the same answer here: this gets you around a quota and nothing else.

How many images can you make on ChatGPT free?#
OpenAI doesn't publish a number. Third-party guides estimate 2 to 3 images a day, but the countdown in your own message is the only figure you can check.
When does the ChatGPT free image limit reset?#
At the end of the countdown in the message ("resets in..."), which was 24 hours on our free account. It is counted from your own usage, so two people who hit the limit at different times see different reset times.
Do image edits count toward the limit?#
Yes. The "image generation and editing" and "image generations and edits" versions of the message say so, and every edit request is a new generation.
Can I finish a ChatGPT image somewhere else?#
Download it, upload it to GPT Image 2.5 on Azurade as a reference image and describe the change you want. The model edits from the picture you give it, so the result stays close to what ChatGPT started.
