Do the credits expire?

No. They stay on your balance with no monthly reset, including after you cancel a plan.

What happens if a generation fails?

The credits go back to your balance automatically.

Is pay per use cheaper than a subscription?

If you spend a full allowance every month, a plan costs less per credit. If you work in bursts, a pack wastes nothing.
