Replicate and fal.ai alternatives, for people who can read API docs

If you know which model you want and you are comfortable calling an API, prepaid platforms like Replicate and fal.ai are cheap, and no consumer product beats them on unit price, ours included.

Their own users complain about everything around the generation: support requests unanswered for months, a balance wiped with no notice, a signup flow that loops on a captcha until you give up.

So we compared what happens when something goes wrong, and whether the credits you loaded are still yours next quarter.

Replicate, fal.ai and Azurade AI

Replicate

A large catalog, straightforward pricing, and the closest thing to a standard in this space. The complaints on record are about support and billing control rather than the platform's engineering.

What it does well

fal.ai

Fast, well-engineered, and popular with people building products on top of image and video models. Its billing complaints are the sharpest in the category.

Azurade AI

An aggregator with an interface, automatic refunds and API keys on the same balance. If your only requirement is the lowest possible unit price for a model you have already chosen, a prepaid platform is the better buy and you should use one.

API keys work on the same non-expiring balance as the web app, with no separate developer plan and no separate pricing
A failed generation is refunded automatically, so the commonest reason to need support never arises

Check before you buy

We are an aggregation layer, so our per-generation price is above raw API cost. For a developer who has already picked a model and does not need an interface, that markup buys nothing. (Our own pricing, September 2026)

Same credits, from your code or from the browser

API keys authenticate against the same account and draw from the same balance as the web app, so there is no developer tier to buy and no second price list to reconcile.

A balance that does not expire suits an intermittent automated workload, and a subscription-gated competitor structurally cannot offer one. Unlimited plans elsewhere generally stop short of API keys, because an unmetered API on a flat fee would be underwater immediately.

Credits never expire. The balance only moves when you add to it or spend from it, with no monthly reset and no rollover cap.
Subscription credits stack, so a quiet month leaves the balance where it was and the next drop lands on top.
A failed generation goes back to your balance automatically, without a ticket or anyone having to approve it.
Canceling takes two clicks in your own profile, ends at the close of the period you already paid for, and shows you the date.
One-time credit packs need no subscription, so you can buy credits, spend them when you like and stop whenever.

Is Replicate cheaper than Azurade AI?▼

For a single model you have already chosen, usually yes. Prepaid API platforms sell close to raw cost with no markup and no subscription, and we are an aggregation layer on top. If unit price is your only criterion, use them. What we add is everything around the generation: automatic refunds on failure, an interface, and a balance that does not expire.

Does Azurade AI have an API?▼

Yes. API-key authentication is in place, you can create a key from your account, and there is a served OpenAPI specification. Keys draw on the same credit balance as the web app, at the same prices, with no separate developer plan.

Do my credits expire if I only use the API occasionally?▼

No. The balance never expires or resets, so a batch job that runs once a quarter draws on money you topped up months earlier, while Replicate's prepaid credit is valid for a year and fal.ai's expires after 365 days.

What happens when a generation fails?▼

The credits go back to your balance automatically, without a ticket and without anyone having to agree with you first. That is worth checking on any platform you evaluate, because a failed video render on a flagship model is not a rounding error.

Are those Trustpilot complaints representative?▼

Treat the scores as weak evidence and the mechanisms as strong evidence. The review counts are small, and developer platforms whose users rarely visit the marketing site collect grievances and almost no praise, so the ratings are skewed by construction. The useful part is that each complaint describes a specific mechanism you can check: a balance wiped without notice, a support request unanswered for months, a spending limit that used to be bypassable before the platform replaced it with a hard cap.
