Sora alternatives, and what actually happened to Sora
OpenAI shut the Sora consumer app down on 26 April 2026, and the Sora 2 API is scheduled for removal on 24 September 2026. If you built a habit or a workflow on it, both ends of it are closing.
We took Sora 2 off Azurade AI ahead of that date rather than sell credits against a model with a published end date. Everything below is a model that will still answer next year, and the honest version of this page is the one that says so.
The comparison is on billing rather than benchmarks, because the model catalogues have converged. Veo, Seedance and Wan are available across most platforms in this category. What differs between them is whether the credits you buy are still there next month.
Video models you can use instead
Checked August 2026.
| Model | What it is for | Available here | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Veo 3.1 | Google's flagship video model, text and image to video | Yes, fast and quality tiers | The closest replacement for Sora 2 on general-purpose realism |
| Seedance 2.5 | Strong motion and camera work, with and without audio | Yes, plus Seedance 2, 2 Fast and 2 Mini | The Fast and Mini tiers are the cheap way to iterate on an idea |
| Wan 2.7 | Text to video, image to video, reference to video and editing | Yes, alongside Wan 2.2, 2.5 and 2.6 | The widest set of input modes of anything in this table |
| Sora 2 and Sora 2 Pro | What you came here for | No, removed ahead of the API shutdown | API removal scheduled for 24 September 2026 |
| Hunyuan and Veo 2 or 3 | Older generations, still useful and cheaper | Yes | Worth trying before paying for a flagship tier |
Where people are going, and what to check first
What happened to Sora, precisely
Two separate closures, four months apart. The consumer app that most people used was killed on 26 April 2026. The API that developers and platforms used is scheduled for removal on 24 September 2026. Web traffic to the site was already falling before either date, but the app was always where the real distribution was.
What it does well
- Sora 2 remains a genuinely strong model until the API is withdrawn
- Anything you rendered with it stays yours; the clips do not expire with the API
Check before you buy
- The consumer app was shut down on 26 April 2026, so there is no first-party product to go back to. (Dated coverage of the shutdown, read August 2026)
- API removal is scheduled for 24 September 2026. Any platform still selling Sora 2 after that date cannot deliver it. (OpenAI's published removal schedule, read August 2026)
Higgsfield
The largest destination for displaced video users, and the strongest video feature set in the consumer tier. If you want the busiest product with the most tooling, it is the obvious move. Check the billing before you commit.
What it does well
- Deepest video tooling in the category and heavy investment behind it
- Support is praised in reviews for handling billing problems quickly
- 4.5 out of 5 on G2 across 82 reviews
Check before you buy
- No pay-as-you-go tier: buying credits requires an active subscription. (Higgsfield pricing, checked August 2026)
- Subscription credits expire monthly with no rollover. (Higgsfield's own FAQ, checked August 2026)
- Reviewers report being charged after cancelling and then refused a refund. (G2 reviews, June and July 2026)
PixVerse
A cheap entry point for video, and the clearest example in this category of how many separate expiry clocks a credit balance can be split across.
What it does well
- One of the lowest monthly prices for video generation
- A free tier exists
Check before you buy
- Daily credits expire the same day; membership credits expire at the end of the billing period. Only subscriber top-ups survive. (PixVerse credit terms, checked August 2026)
- It states outright that dissatisfaction with a generated result is not grounds for a refund, which matters more in video, where a single clip can cost real money. (PixVerse refund policy, checked August 2026)
Running the models yourself through an API platform
Developer platforms sell the same video models at close to raw cost with no subscription. If you can read API docs and you already know which model you want, this is genuinely cheaper than any consumer product, including ours.
What it does well
- Lowest unit price available for someone who does not need an interface
- No subscription, no plan to maintain
Check before you buy
- Users report support requests going unanswered for months on the largest of these platforms. (Trustpilot reviews, February and March 2026)
- One platform wiped a user's remaining $2,000 balance with no email and no warning. (Trustpilot review, June 2026)
- Another user reports a model bypassing their configured spending limit and charging past it. (Trustpilot review, June 2025)
Why the billing matters more in video
Video is expensive per generation, so the gap between platforms is not the sticker price, it is what happens to an unspent balance and to a clip that fails. A single failed render on a flagship video model can cost more than a month of image generation.
Here, a failed generation is refunded to your balance automatically, and the balance itself has no expiry date attached to it. You can buy a pack of credits, generate a few clips this week, come back in six months, and the rest is still there.
- Credits never expire. The balance is a counter that only moves when you add to it or spend it. There is no monthly reset, no rollover cap, and no expiry date.
- Subscription credits stack. A quiet month leaves the balance where it was, and the next drop lands on top of it.
- A failed generation is refunded automatically. No ticket, no support queue, no waiting on a human to agree with you.
- Cancelling takes two clicks in your own profile, ends at the close of the period you already paid for, and shows you the date.
- One-time credit packs need no subscription. Buy credits, spend them whenever, stop whenever.
Try it before you commit to anything
There is no plan to start, nothing to cancel later, and the credits you buy stay yours until you spend them. Read the pricing page first if you want the numbers before the signup.
