Sora alternatives, and what happened to Sora

OpenAI shut the Sora consumer app down on 26 April 2026, and the Sora 2 API followed on 24 September 2026. If you built a habit or a workflow on it, both ends of it are gone.

We took Sora 2 off Azurade AI before the API date, because selling credits against a model with a published end date made no sense to us. Every model below will still answer next year.

Veo, Seedance and Wan are sold by most platforms in this category, so picking a platform comes down to billing, mainly whether the credits you buy are still there next month.

Where people are going, and what to check first

What happened to Sora

Sora closed in two steps, five months apart: the consumer app most people used was killed on 26 April 2026, and the API that developers and platforms used was withdrawn on 24 September 2026. Web traffic to the site was already falling before either date, though the app was always where the real distribution was.

Running the models yourself through an API platform

Developer platforms sell the same video models at close to raw cost with no subscription. If you can read API docs and you already know which model you want, this is cheaper than any consumer product, ours included.

Moving Sora 2 API code to Seedance or Veo

OpenAI's Videos API worked in three steps: create a job, poll it, download the file. Our REST API keeps that shape, so moving a pipeline off Sora 2 means changing the URL, the key and the request body, and the polling loop around them can stay as it is.

The first call asks Seedance 2.5 for a 5-second 16:9 clip with sound (it goes up to 30 seconds at 1080p) and answers 202 with the job's id. Poll that id until the status reads completed, and the MP4 link is in outputs. For Veo 3.1, set the model to veo3.1 and leave out duration, since its clips are 8 seconds long.

Create the key on your profile page. Send the same body to /api/v2/generations/estimate first and you get the price back without starting anything, and a job that fails puts its credits back on your balance by itself.

Why the billing matters more in video

Video is expensive per generation, and a single failed render on a flagship video model can cost more than a month of image generation. What a platform does with that failed clip, and with the balance you have not spent yet, decides more than its sticker price.

On Azurade AI a failed generation goes back to your balance automatically, and the balance has no expiry date. Buy a pack of credits, make a few clips this week, come back in six months and the rest is still there.

Credits never expire. The balance only moves when you add to it or spend from it, with no monthly reset and no rollover cap.
Subscription credits stack, so a quiet month leaves the balance where it was and the next drop lands on top.
A failed generation goes back to your balance automatically, without a ticket or anyone having to approve it.

Is Sora shut down?▼

Yes, both halves of it. The consumer app was shut down on 26 April 2026, and the Sora 2 API was withdrawn on 24 September 2026, so no platform can run it now, whatever their pricing page still says.

Can I still use Sora 2 on Azurade AI?▼

No. We removed Sora 2 and Sora 2 Pro before the API was withdrawn, because a credit spent on a model with a published end date is a refund waiting to happen. Veo 3.1, Seedance 2.5 and Wan 2.7 run here on the same balance, and if a generation fails on any of them the credits go back automatically.

What is the closest model to Sora 2?▼

For general-purpose realistic video, Veo 3.1 is the closest replacement and it comes in both fast and quality tiers. Seedance 2.5 is the stronger pick for motion and camera movement, and it has cheaper Fast and Mini tiers for iterating before you commit to a full render. Wan 2.7 covers the widest set of inputs, including image-to-video, reference-to-video and editing.

What replaces the Sora API for developers?▼

Veo 3.1 and Seedance 2.5 are the usual replacements, and both do text-to-video and image-to-video with sound. Here one API key reaches both, billed from the same credits as the web app, which never expire. The curl example on this page shows the whole create-and-poll loop.

Do I need a subscription to generate video?▼

Not on Azurade AI. One-time credit packs work without any subscription and the credits do not expire, so you can buy once for a project and leave the rest for the next one. Most consumer alternatives in this category require an active plan before you can buy or spend credits.

Are these video models cheaper somewhere else?▼

For a developer who can call an API directly, yes: prepaid API platforms sell the same models at close to wholesale, and we do not beat them on unit price. They generally offer no interface, Replicate and fal.ai credits expire a year after purchase, and their own reviews describe wiped balances and unanswered tickets.
