Sora alternatives, and what actually happened to Sora

OpenAI shut the Sora consumer app down on 26 April 2026, and the Sora 2 API is scheduled for removal on 24 September 2026. If you built a habit or a workflow on it, both ends of it are closing.

We took Sora 2 off Azurade AI ahead of that date rather than sell credits against a model with a published end date. Everything below is a model that will still answer next year, and the honest version of this page is the one that says so.

The comparison is on billing rather than benchmarks, because the model catalogues have converged. Veo, Seedance and Wan are available across most platforms in this category. What differs between them is whether the credits you buy are still there next month.

Where people are going, and what to check first

What happened to Sora, precisely

Two separate closures, four months apart. The consumer app that most people used was killed on 26 April 2026. The API that developers and platforms used is scheduled for removal on 24 September 2026. Web traffic to the site was already falling before either date, but the app was always where the real distribution was.

A cheap entry point for video, and the clearest example in this category of how many separate expiry clocks a credit balance can be split across.

Running the models yourself through an API platform

Developer platforms sell the same video models at close to raw cost with no subscription. If you can read API docs and you already know which model you want, this is genuinely cheaper than any consumer product, including ours.

Why the billing matters more in video

Video is expensive per generation, so the gap between platforms is not the sticker price, it is what happens to an unspent balance and to a clip that fails. A single failed render on a flagship video model can cost more than a month of image generation.

Here, a failed generation is refunded to your balance automatically, and the balance itself has no expiry date attached to it. You can buy a pack of credits, generate a few clips this week, come back in six months, and the rest is still there.

Credits never expire. The balance is a counter that only moves when you add to it or spend it. There is no monthly reset, no rollover cap, and no expiry date.
Subscription credits stack. A quiet month leaves the balance where it was, and the next drop lands on top of it.
A failed generation is refunded automatically. No ticket, no support queue, no waiting on a human to agree with you.
Cancelling takes two clicks in your own profile, ends at the close of the period you already paid for, and shows you the date.
One-time credit packs need no subscription. Buy credits, spend them whenever, stop whenever.

Is Sora shut down?▼

The consumer app was shut down on 26 April 2026, and the Sora 2 API is scheduled for removal on 24 September 2026. Until that date, platforms that resell the API can still run it. After it, no one can, regardless of what their pricing page says.

Can I still use Sora 2 on Azurade AI?▼

No. We removed Sora 2 and Sora 2 Pro ahead of the scheduled API removal, because a credit spent on a model with a published end date is a refund waiting to happen. Veo 3.1, Seedance 2.5 and Wan 2.7 run here on the same balance, and if a generation fails on any of them the credits go back automatically.

What is the closest model to Sora 2?▼

For general-purpose realistic video, Veo 3.1 is the closest replacement and it comes in both fast and quality tiers. Seedance 2.5 is the stronger pick for motion and camera movement, and it has cheaper Fast and Mini tiers for iterating before you commit to a full render. Wan 2.7 covers the widest set of inputs, including image-to-video, reference-to-video and editing.

Do I need a subscription to generate video?▼

Not here. One-time credit packs work without any subscription, and the credits do not expire, so occasional video work does not require keeping a monthly plan alive between projects. Most of the consumer alternatives in this category do require an active plan before you can buy or spend credits.

Are these video models cheaper somewhere else?▼

For a developer who can call an API directly, yes. Prepaid API platforms sell the same models at close to wholesale and we will not pretend to beat them on unit price. What they generally do not offer is an interface, automatic refunds on failed generations, or any commitment about your balance surviving. Their own reviews describe wiped balances and unanswered tickets, and that is the trade you are making.
