Grok image limit: when it resets and what changed in 2026

Message limit reached. You've reached the free tier limit. Grok Message

Most guides to the Grok image limit are out of date. Since June 2026 a paid Grok plan spends one weekly usage pool that images, video, chat and voice all draw from, so the daily image counts in those guides don't apply to it. The pool resets on a schedule you can see in your own account under Settings, Usage. Free accounts have separate limits that xAI doesn't put a number on. The "every 2 hours" and "midnight UTC" answers you'll find elsewhere describe older rules, or nothing xAI ever published.

"Message limit reached. You've reached the free tier limit."#

This is the card a free Grok account gets instead of an answer: the title "Message limit reached", then "You've reached the free tier limit. Try again later or upgrade to SuperGrok for much higher limits and premium features." and a "Try SuperGrok for free" button. A free user posted it on r/grok on March 24, 2026 (Reddit, r/grok), still locked out more than 10 hours later. The card has no reset time on it.

The wording changes with the plan names. On May 31, 2026 another free user on r/grok quoted "You've reached your limit of 20 Grok questions per 24 hours for now. Please sign up for Premium or Premium+ to access more or check back later." (Reddit, r/grok), and Premium and Premium+ are X's plans. Since October 12, 2026 new customers start on The X Subscription instead, so the plan names in the message may change again.

When does the Grok image limit reset?#

On a paid plan, once a week. xAI's Grok FAQ says the usage pool "resets every week on a schedule shown in the Usage tab in Settings" (xAI, Grok FAQ), and the Usage tab on the web and in the mobile app shows the reset date. xAI doesn't publish a fixed day or hour, so the date in your own Usage tab is the only one that applies to you.

Free accounts have their own limits for Chat and Voice, which the same FAQ says reset on their own schedule, apart from the paid pool. xAI doesn't say how long that schedule is, and the free card above doesn't show a time either, so all you can do on a free account is try again later.

How the weekly usage pool works#

xAI rolled the pool out to paid users in June 2026. You get one pool to spend on any Grok product, and different products cost different amounts depending on how much compute they need. Image and video generation (Grok Imagine) is one of those products, so a week of heavy video use leaves less of the pool for images, and the other way round. The Usage tab breaks the pool down by product as percentages: API, Build, Chat, Imagine and Voice.

Hitting the weekly limit doesn't lock you out completely, the FAQ calls it "not a hard stop". You can wait for the reset, upgrade, or buy Extra Usage Credits. Those are sold on the web only and spent after your plan's included usage runs out, at the standard rate, so a generation paid with them costs more than one inside the plan. Two more details from the FAQ: a 720p video falls back to 480p once you've used your tier's 720p allowance, and every image and video has a Grok watermark that can't be switched off.

Grok plans and how much usage they include#

On October 12, 2026 xAI moved new customers onto The X Subscription, one plan for Grok, Cursor and X Premium (xAI, "Introducing The X Subscription"). The pool is shared across the Grok apps, the Grok tab on X and Cursor, and xAI states the larger plans as multiples of Plus:

PlanPriceIncluded usage
Free$0Limited
Plus$8 a monthBase
Premium$30 a month4x Plus
Super$100 a month15x Plus
Ultra$200 a month50x Plus

xAI publishes no image or video counts for any of them, only these multiples. If you already pay for SuperGrok or X Premium, The X Subscription is the plan for new customers, so your old plan's limits may still apply to you.

The 2-hour figure is from an older system. On August 6, 2025 Grok's own account on X replied to a user that "the Grok Imagine limit resets every 2 hours (10 generations for free users, 100 for X Premium+)", and that the exact reset time shows in the error message. On November 25, 2025 a free user on r/grok noticed the message no longer said it would refresh in 2 hours (Reddit, r/grok). Guides still repeat it, although paid plans moved to the weekly pool in June 2026. We found no xAI page that mentions a midnight UTC reset at all, and the daily image counts many guides quote (20 a day, 50 a day and so on) don't trace back to xAI either.

Can free Grok still make images?#

xAI doesn't say clearly. The X Subscription table lists the free plan as "daily access to Grok" with "limited" usage, and the FAQ only names Chat and Voice when it describes free-tier limits. Image generation has been cut back for free users before: on January 9, 2026, after the backlash over sexualized edits of real people, Grok limited some of its Imagine image features to paid subscribers on X (CNN, January 9, 2026). In March 2026 free users on r/grok reported getting 3 to 5 pictures before the errors started (Reddit, r/grok), and a few days later that Imagine was paywalled for them altogether (Reddit, r/grok). Those are user reports, xAI hasn't confirmed a number either way.

What you can do when Grok stops generating#

  • Wait for the reset. On a paid plan the date is in Settings, Usage. On a free account the card gives no time, so try again later.
  • Buy Extra Usage Credits on the web. They cost the standard rate and expire one year after purchase.
  • Upgrade. Each step up multiplies the pool, and every plan still has a weekly limit.
  • Make the image with another model somewhere that charges per image and has no weekly window.

Making images on Azurade while Grok is paused#

Azurade AI doesn't run Grok Imagine, so you'd be switching models. It runs image models like GPT Image 2.5, Nano Banana 2 and Seedream 4.5 and video models like Veo 3.1 and Seedance 2.5, all on one credit balance with no weekly pool or reset to wait for. The only limit is how many credits you have. A 1K image costs 3 credits on GPT Image 2.5 and 4 on Nano Banana 2, and a Veo 3.1 Fast clip costs 30. Credits come in packs, 100 for $3.99 or 1,000 for $29.99, with no subscription, and they never expire, which Grok's top-ups do (why we don't sell expiring credits). A generation that fails is refunded automatically.

Prompts on Azurade go through a content check too. If Grok refused an image on content grounds expect the same answer here, this gets you around a quota and nothing else.

Questions about the Grok image limit#

How many images can you make on Grok per day?#

On a paid plan there's no daily number any more. Paid plans spend a weekly pool, and xAI gives the plans as multiples of Plus (Premium 4x, Super 15x, Ultra 50x) without image counts. How many images that buys depends on what else you use Grok for that week.

Does the Grok limit reset at midnight UTC?#

We found no xAI page that says so. xAI says the paid pool resets weekly, on the schedule shown in Settings, Usage.

Do Grok's extra credits expire?#

Yes. xAI's FAQ says Extra Usage Credits expire one year after purchase, unless stated otherwise.

Is there a way to get around the Grok image limit?#

Inside Grok, only waiting, upgrading or buying Extra Usage Credits. Outside it, use a pay-per-image service with no weekly window, like the models on Azurade above.

Do other chatbots limit images the same way?#

ChatGPT shows a countdown that ran 24 hours on our free account (the ChatGPT image limit), and Gemini refreshes every 5 hours up to a weekly cap (Gemini's image and video limits).
