Why iPhone photos are HEIC, and what converting to JPG fixes

Apple moved the camera roll to HEIC with iOS 11 in 2017 and it is still the default on every iPhone. A HEIC file carries the same picture as a JPG in roughly half the bytes, because it uses the HEVC codec, and the trouble starts when the photo leaves the phone. Windows asks for a paid HEVC extension before Explorer will show a thumbnail, while upload forms, print shops and older versions of Photoshop take JPG and refuse the rest. Converting HEIC to JPG turns an unreadable file into one every program written in the last thirty years can open. Here the decoding happens on your own machine, so you skip the upload and the queue, and no server sets a size cap.

What the quality slider does to a HEIC to JPG conversion

JPG throws away detail on purpose, and the slider decides how much. At the default of 85 the loss is invisible on a photograph at normal viewing size. At 50 the flat areas go first, so skies band, a plain wall picks up blotches and text in the picture grows halos, while at 100 the file can come out larger than the HEIC for no gain you can see. Most cases need one of two settings: 90 and above for anything heading to a printer, 75 for an email attachment, which roughly halves the file again. If the JPG has to fit a hard size limit, convert at 90 and run the result through our image compressor, which shows the resulting bytes as you drag.

What carries over, and what the JPG loses

The photo is drawn onto a canvas and re-encoded, so the JPG has no EXIF block and no camera model, date or coordinates. A Live Photo gives you the still frame and not the clip, burst shots arrive as separate files, and edits made in the Photos app are baked in because the phone exports the edited version. Transparency, in the rare case a HEIC has any, is filled with white, since JPG has no alpha channel; use HEIC to PNG when you need it kept. To put iPhone photos straight into a document, the JPG to PDF tool reads HEIC directly and makes one page per photo.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert HEIC to JPG?+

Drag the HEIC or HEIF files into the upload area, leave the output format on JPG, set the quality slider and click Convert. Each photo is decoded on your own machine and then you download it, with no account and no watermark.

Does converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?+

A little. JPG is lossy and the picture is re-encoded on the way out, so the result is not identical pixel for pixel, though at the default quality of 85 you will not see the difference on a photograph. Raise the slider to 90 or higher for print.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?+

No. The HEIC decoder runs inside the page, so the photos stay on the device and there is nothing to delete afterwards, and the speed depends on your own processor instead of someone's queue.

Can I convert a whole folder of iPhone photos at once?+

Yes. Drop in as many files as you like and they convert one after another at the same quality setting. If the decoder cannot read a file, that one is marked with an error and the rest of the batch carries on.

Why is my JPG bigger than the HEIC it came from?+

HEIC uses the HEVC codec, which packs a photo into roughly half the bytes JPEG needs for the same detail, so expect the JPG to land at about twice the size.

Is the capture date and location kept?+

No. The photo is re-encoded from a canvas, which drops the EXIF block with the camera model, capture date and GPS coordinates. Keep the HEIC originals when the metadata matters.
