Why a HEIC photo will not open, and what PNG fixes
Every iPhone since iOS 11 in 2017 saves photos as HEIC unless you change a setting. It is a good format. A HEIC file is about half the size of the same photo as a JPEG, with the same detail. The trouble starts when the photo leaves the phone. Windows needs a paid HEVC codec to open one. Plenty of upload forms, CMS admin panels and older tools accept only JPG and PNG. So you end up with a folder of photos nothing will read.
PNG is the safe choice when you need the image exactly as it is. No compression on top of what the phone already did, full transparency support, and every browser, editor and office program made in the last twenty years opens it.
What to expect from the file size
PNG is lossless, so the files come out big. A 3 MB HEIC from an iPhone 15 often becomes a 15 to 25 MB PNG. That is normal. The phone already threw away detail when it saved the HEIC, and PNG cannot bring it back, it only stops any further loss. If you are sending the photo to a website or by mail, JPG is usually the better pick: our HEIC to JPG converter has a quality slider and makes files a tenth of the size.
How it works here
The conversion runs inside your browser. The HEIC decoder is loaded as WebAssembly and does its work on your machine, so the photos are not uploaded anywhere and there is nothing to delete afterwards. Frequently asked questions
Will converting HEIC to PNG improve the quality?+
No. HEIC is a lossy format, so the phone already discarded some detail when it saved the photo. PNG keeps everything that is left and adds nothing. You get a larger file with the same picture.
Why is my PNG 20 MB?+
PNG stores every pixel without loss, and photographs have a lot of pixels. A 12-megapixel photo lands between 15 and 30 MB. If size matters more than losslessness, convert to JPG instead.
Does it keep transparency?+
Camera photos have no transparent areas, so the PNG is fully opaque. A HEIC exported from an app with an alpha channel keeps it.
Does it work on Windows without the HEVC codec?+
Yes. The decoder is inside the page, so Windows never has to open the HEIC itself. Any current Chrome, Edge or Firefox is enough.
Can I convert many files at once?+
Yes. Drop a whole folder. Each file converts on its own, and one that fails does not stop the others.
Is the photo metadata kept?+
No. EXIF data such as location, camera model and capture date is not carried into the PNG. Good if you are posting the photo online, so keep the original if you need the date.
