Crop an image into a circle with transparent corners

Plenty of circle croppers hand you a round picture sitting on a white square, which looks wrong the moment you place it on any other color. This one cuts the circle out of the canvas and saves a PNG whose corners are empty, so the avatar sits on a dark theme, a colored card or a slide without a pale box around it. PNG, JPG, WebP and iPhone HEIC files all open, and the download keeps your file's name with -circle added to the end.

Getting the face in the middle

A circular crop throws away the corners of the photo, so a picture framed for a rectangle usually needs moving. Zoom runs from 1x to 3x and pulls the picture in closer when the subject was shot from a distance, while the horizontal and vertical offsets slide the image behind the mask so a face framed off to one side can come back to the center. Leave a little space above the head and around the shoulders. Most platforms shrink an avatar to thirty or forty pixels somewhere in their interface, and a face cropped tight at that size becomes an unreadable smudge.

Border width and color

The border is drawn as a percentage of the circle radius, so it keeps its proportion whether the export is 400 pixels or 3000; a border measured in pixels would vanish on one screen and dominate on another, since avatars get displayed at wildly different sizes. A thin ring in a brand color separates a dark photo from a dark page background, and a thick white one reads as a sticker, which works on busy slides. Leave it at zero when the picture already has a clean edge. For the round crop on a solid color instead of transparency, switch off the transparent background and pick the color.
